"Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?" — is it humans training machines, or machines training humans? The discourse on the relationship between machines and humans has ancient roots. In Descartes' mind–body dualism, the body possesses extension (physical space) but cannot think, while "the mind can think and has no extension." Now that machines are exhibiting increasingly human-like traits with technological advancement, this continuity has in turn become a fundamental challenge to the very reality of the human soul: "Does the human being possess a soul that transcends the material body?" "Are humans merely more sophisticated machines?" In this work, the reversal and manipulation of the traditional relationship between machine and human serves to narratively bridge the rupture in the chain of continuity between machines, animals, and humans—offering a 21st-century meditation on this very question.
