Wave is an AIGC data-driven moving-image artwork that materializes the global financial order as the sublime force of a body of water. It fuses global financial data with hydrodynamic simulation within the latent space of AI, establishing an ontological isomorphism between natural tides and the liquidity of capital, and explores non-human actors, capital, and individual perception.
The work enters the dim waters after sunset on the Bund—a moment when the human circadian rhythm should be asleep—yet global financial indicators (exchange rates, volatility, and the frequency of cross-border flows) still drive the simulation and oscillation of the hydrodynamic model.
In the algorithmic gaze, do the rise and fall of ocean waves and the cycles of the economy follow the same around-the-clock wave logic?
In this 24/7 uninterrupted wave computation, the seamless operation and rapid expansion pursued by capital algorithms stand in profound friction with the circadian rhythm and the mortality inherent to the human body. As non-human actors, the invisible financial algorithms and exchange-rate mechanisms are relentlessly reshaping geopolitics, environments, and everyday life.
The work thus asks: when the moon is no longer the gravitational source shaping the tides, and financial algorithms become this hidden gravity, who exactly controls the whole, and who has been reduced to a passive object?
The work seeks to break the traditional human/nature dichotomy, probing the increasingly blurred boundary between natural phenomena and human subjectivity in the face of vast systems.
Background
While walking in a lakeside park, I saw the dark water after the last glow of sunset—an oscillation that does not bend to individual will, much like the rise and fall of exchange rates watched around the clock by crypto traders before their screens. Neither fluctuation can be changed lastingly or profoundly by individual power.

Jiwen Li, an artist and independent researcher who frequently moves between places, currently lives and works in China. She often adopts on-site research as a mode of artistic practice, which encompasses investigations and reflections on cultural differences, local customs, and ecological environments. Her works are consequently composed of multiple layers and based on a variety of media, exploring how living entities exist within potential landscapes beyond prevailing narratives.
She has been active in both domestic and international institutions and projects, including the Parrot Culture and Art Foundation, The Earth Book, Xinhua Art Service Center, Goethe-Institut, By Art Matters, ENSAD Nancy, the Regional Contemporary Art Foundation of Provence-Alpes-C'Azur, and the Centre Pompidou, among others.
Focusing on the ontological impact of algorithms, it explores how 'value' is dissolved and reconfigured within potential landscapes that transcend the anthropocentric.
