You Only Have Seven Seconds is a poetic human–AI collaborative documentary that unfolds as both a visual archive of an internationally exhibited installation and a cinematic experiment in memory preservation. Developed from the interactive AI artwork ReCollection, the film draws on seven-second whispered recollections contributed by participants worldwide. Speech recognition, text auto-completion, and image generation transform these fragments into synthetic visual memories. The artists curate and reorganize the resulting audio, text, and image archive through speech-to-video generation and procedural visualization, weaving a culturally diverse montage of love and loss. Patterns, counterpoints, and resonances between individual memories evoke a poetics of relation and form a dynamic portrait of collective human selfhood.
Background
The work grew from Weidi Zhang’s experience of witnessing her grandmother’s cognitive decline. What began as a personal reflection through ReCollection evolved, through international exhibitions and public participation, into shared world-building across cultural and identity boundaries. In 2025, with participants’ permission, the artists curated the installation’s accumulated audio and generated-image archive to create the film.
Concept
You Only Have Seven Seconds is a poetic human–AI collaborative documentary that unfolds as both a visual archive of an internationally exhibited installation and a cinematic experiment in memory preservation. Against rising Alzheimer’s cases and machine-generated false memories, the film reimagines remembrance through artificial intelligence. Reorganizing voices, texts, and generated images contributed through ReCollection, the artists build their “dialogical relationships,” forming patterns, counterpoints, and resonances that evoke a poetics of relation—where difference is acknowledged, not dissolved. Conceived as a personal reflection, the work evolves into shared world-building that reassembles the ephemeral past into a dynamic portrait of collective human selfhood.
