作品将2022年创作的《燃烧圣母院重生》视为一处持续损毁的数字遗址。借助 Vibe Coding、智能体与生成式人工智能,作品重新检阅并重构原始 CG 影像,同时将散落于旧目录中的源文件、工程结构、模型版本与生成记录,视为一份长期被忽略的数字记忆遗产。

现实中的历史建筑需要保护与修复,数字作品同样拥有脆弱的身体。然而,数字遗产的损毁往往悄无声息:源文件丢失或损坏、格式与链接失效、像素逐渐模糊、模型版本缺席、软件依赖停止运行。随着信息变得模糊、不可读取或失去原有语境,部分空间结构、创作过程与艺术判断也随之消失,形成无法逆转的数字创伤。

作品不再试图复原一个稳定而完整的“原本”,而是让 AI 识别纹理涂抹、结构溶解、数据缺口与信息失效的区域,并对其进行标记、追踪和局部修正。智能体不仅监察受损的影像,也监察自身的修复行为:记录判断依据与不确定性,比较不同版本,识别修复过程中产生的新误差,并在必要时回退、重试或重新解释。检测、追踪、修正与再次检测,由此不再是隐藏在幕后的技术流程,而成为影像自身的结构。

作品在观察、识别、修复与再审视之间循环展开。智能体提出判断和修复路径,修复的过程不再等同于复原,而成为人类判断、机器推演与数字记忆之间持续协商的方法。它所维护的不只是一个可播放的结果,也包括作品曾经如何被制作、损坏、误读和重新理解的历史。

现实中的圣母院经历了漫长而具体的重建,它的数字镜像却被迫不断接受重生。“第二场火”不再燃烧物质,而发生在源文件的遗失、信息的失效、模型的误读,以及自动优化对旧有痕迹的覆盖之中。当修复系统也可能制造新的损伤,当原初状态已经无法返回,我们究竟是在保存过去,还是借修复之名重新制造它?

The work approaches the 2022 animation Rebirth of the Burning Notre-Dame as a digital ruin undergoing continuous deterioration. Through vibe coding, AI agents, and generative systems, the original CGI moving image is repeatedly examined and reconstructed. At the same time, its source files, project structures, model versions, and generation records—scattered across old directories—are treated as an overlooked form of digital memory and cultural heritage.

Just as material history requires conservation, digital works possess their own vulnerable bodies. Yet the deterioration of digital heritage often occurs silently: source files are lost or corrupted, formats and links become invalid, pixels grow blurred, model versions disappear, and software dependencies cease to function. As information becomes ambiguous, unreadable, or detached from its original context, spatial structures, creative processes, and artistic decisions may also vanish, leaving irreversible digital wounds.

Rather than attempting to restore a stable and complete “original,” the work uses AI to identify areas where textures smear, structures dissolve, data is missing, or information has ceased to function. These regions are marked, tracked, and locally reconstructed. The agents do not only inspect the damaged images; they also monitor their own interventions. They record the basis and uncertainty of their judgments, compare successive versions, detect new errors introduced during repair, and, when necessary, roll back, retry, or reinterpret their actions. Detection, misreading, correction, and renewed inspection thus cease to be hidden technical procedures and become part of the image’s visible structure.

The work unfolds recursively through observation, detection, repair, and re-examination. The agents propose diagnoses and possible paths of reconstruction, while the artist determines what should be recovered and what must remain present as absence. Restoration is no longer understood as a return to a former state, but as an ongoing negotiation between human judgment, machine inference, and digital memory. What is preserved is not merely a playable result, but also the history of how the work was made, damaged, misread, and reinterpreted.

While Notre-Dame underwent a slow and material reconstruction, its digital double is compelled to be reborn without end. The “second fire” no longer burns through matter, but through the loss of source files, the failure of information, computational misreading, and the erasure of earlier traces by automated optimization. When systems of repair can themselves produce new damage, and the original state can no longer be recovered, are we preserving the past—or producing it anew in the name of repair?

2022年的原作诞生于生成式人工智能开始广泛进入图像生产的阶段。此后,部分源文件、三维模型与工程数据的遗失,使原作出现了无法重新渲染、改变视角或恢复细节的技术断层。数字作品看似可以被无限复制,却同样会因数据缺失、压缩损耗与软件环境变迁而遭受不可逆的创伤。

与此同时,AI智能体与Vibe Coding迅速发展。创作者越来越多地通过语言提出目标,由系统生成代码、组织流程并修改结果。技术门槛的降低扩展了创作能力,也使媒介语言被压缩为可迅速调用和替换的风格。《燃烧圣母院重生:第二场火》由此重新面对原作:AI既是加速图像变异的力量,也是检阅数字创伤、尝试修正缺失的工具。

The original work was created in 2022, as generative AI began to enter visual production on a broader scale. The subsequent loss of source files, 3D models, and project data created technical discontinuities: certain details could no longer be restored, viewpoints could no longer be adjusted, and scenes could no longer be rendered again. Although digital works appear infinitely reproducible, they remain vulnerable to irreversible damage caused by missing data, lossy compression, and changing software environments.

During the same period, AI agents and vibe coding developed rapidly. Artists increasingly began to formulate intentions through language while computational systems generated code, organized workflows, and revised outputs. This lowering of technical barriers expanded creative capacity, but also compressed complex media languages into styles that could be instantly invoked and replaced. The work therefore returns to its own digital remains with an ambivalent instrument: AI becomes both a force that accelerates visual mutation and a means of examining and repairing digital trauma.

作品并不试图恢复一个完整而稳定的“原本”,而是将原作的缺失、误读与技术残留视为其新的历史层次。AI快速拟态不同媒介的视觉逻辑,使曾经需要长期训练才能形成的语言转化为可调用的风格;在连续的“优化”中,原作被曲解、增殖和覆盖。与此同时,智能体又对这些变化进行检测、标记和修正,形成生成与检阅相互循环的结构。

作品由此形成一种往复的方法:观察、识别、标记、修复,再重新审视。创作不再是一条从构想到成品的单向路径,而成为艺术家、数字档案与智能体之间持续协商的过程。智能体提出判断,艺术家则决定哪些信息应当恢复,哪些错误应被保留,以及修复应在何处停止。

“第二场火”不再燃烧物质,而发生在数据遗失、模型误读与自动优化的覆盖之中。修复也不再意味着回到过去,而是承认原初状态已经无法抵达。当机器同时成为生成者、检阅者与修复者,作品最终追问:我们是在保存一段数字历史,还是正在以修复之名重新制造它?

Rather than recovering a complete and stable “original,” the work treats absence, computational misreading, and technical residue as new historical layers. AI rapidly imitates the visual logics of different media, converting languages once acquired through sustained practice into callable styles. Through successive acts of “optimization,” the original is distorted, multiplied, and overwritten. At the same time, AI agents inspect, mark, and revise these transformations, producing a recursive structure in which generation and examination continually act upon one another.

The work therefore develops a cyclical methodology: observation, detection, annotation, repair, and renewed examination. Creation is no longer a linear progression from conception to completion, but an ongoing negotiation among the artist, the digital archive, and the intelligent agent. The agent proposes judgments; the artist determines what should be recovered, which errors should remain, and where repair must end.

The “second fire” no longer burns through matter. It operates through data loss, model misinterpretation, and the erasures produced by automated optimization. Restoration no longer signifies a return to the past, but an acknowledgment that the original state has become inaccessible. When the machine acts simultaneously as generator, examiner, and restorer, are we preserving digital history—or producing it anew in the name of repair?

Shilong (Gary) Zhu is an AI creative entrepreneur and educator. A graduate of SCI-Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture), he currently teaches at Shanghai Normal University Tianhua College.

Inspired by SCI-Arc’s pioneering approach to education, he co-founded YouthDigitalGroup (YDG) in 2023 and curated Evolving Spaces, an international touring exhibition of digital art. He has also contributed to the development of the AI Art Exhibition at the Inclusion·Conference on the Bund, advancing the presentation of AI-generated moving images and generative art while exploring emerging forms of culture and entertainment.

Alongside his creative practice, Zhu has maintained a sustained commitment to education and public engagement. As a co-founder of Aisheng Wanwu Technology, he works across AIGC content services, education, and entrepreneurial initiatives. Through interdisciplinary practice and public knowledge-sharing, he continues to forge connections among technology, the post-Anthropocene, and humanistic narratives.
