No Further Input Required begins with a human-defined initial condition: a seed, a small set of rules, and relations. The structure gradually unfolds into an evolving network. When external input stops, the system receives no new seed. Instead, it measures its own density, symmetry, stability and variation to decide whether to expand, connect, prune, or mutate. Each output then becomes a condition for the next cycle. The work asks when human judgment stops appearing as continuous operation and begins to persist as a rule within the system.
Background
The work grows out of the artist’s ongoing practice with real-time visual systems, generative logic, and AI-assisted coding. During development, many possibilities were repeatedly tested, selected, and removed, leaving a system that can run autonomously while still visibly carrying human decisions.
Concept
“No Further Input Required” refers to a system that has been tuned to continue on its own. Rather than simulating independent intelligence, the work focuses on a more concrete question: how earlier choices become rules and boundaries that continue to constrain and shape what is generated after continuous human operation stops.

Ewan Qian
Ewan Qian (b. 1998) is a media artist and live audiovisual performer, and a co-founder and core member of the art collective VIRTURA. His practice moves across sound, moving image, time, and space, examining how viewing and perception are reshaped when images enter live environments, bodies, and architecture. His work spans live audiovisual performance, spatial moving image, generative art, spatial capture, and real-time visual systems, and has expanded into audiovisual interaction developed through collaboration with AI. He is interested in how artistic judgment and formal choice continue to shape a work as technology extends the boundaries of what can be produced. Selected works include TIMER and Drop Flow. TIMER was presented at the 2024 Hangzhou International Electronic Music Festival, while Drop Flow was presented at the 2025 China (Hangzhou) International Art and Technology Biennale. His individual work Ether Fragment was selected for the DREAM·video section of the 10th West Bund Art & Design Fair. His works and collaborative projects have also appeared at the Shenzhen Light Art Festival, Shanghai Fashion Week, Shenzhen BO LIVE’s TITAN Holographic Sound Forest audiovisual program, CAN Festival, DigitalFUTURES 2026, WAVES CROSS VOL.3, and live venues including REACTOR, EXIT, and Cedar Land in Shanghai.
Current interests: how AI enters the creative workflow, how works, code, and preferences are stored, and how human judgment continues to shape a system after it appears able to run on its own.
