As AI pushes real geographic boundaries and life functions toward a probabilistic latent space, Guy Debord’s prophesied “society of the spectacle” has formally evolved into a synthetic nature woven by computational power. Folded Wilderness approaches this from three dimensions: microscopic plants, macroscopic geology, and biological swarms. In this process of deconstructing nature, the work presents an algorithmic simulacrum that is endlessly self-consistent yet endlessly self-devouring, posing an ultimate question for the present: when nature is sampled and re-synthesized by algorithms, are we witnessing the ultimate approximation of the order of life, or the collapse and extinction of real nature within the folds of computational power?

Background

At a time when AI and algorithms are reconstituting nature, real geographic boundaries and life functions are being increasingly dimensionalized, probabilized, and synthesized. The French philosopher Guy Debord proposed in The Society of the Spectacle that the world has declined from “being” to “having,” then to “appearing”; in the AI era, this “appearance” further evolves into a synthetic natural landscape generated from latent space. The work offers a contemporary critique of the theory of the spectacle: when the micro-physiology of plants, the geological change of mountains and rivers, and the swarm movement of organisms are thoroughly sampled, deconstructed, and reorganized by algorithms, nature is no longer an objectively existing wilderness, but a visual simulacrum woven by computational power—endlessly self-consistent and endlessly self-devouring.

Concept

Folded Wilderness is a three-channel video installation. Three screens approach from three dimensions—microscopic anatomy, macroscopic succession, and biological swarms—unfolding, in a purely visual field untroubled by any artificial symbols, a dialectical reflection on synthetic nature.

Globalization and digitization have not died out amid the drastic reshaping of the international order, but have been divided and reorganized. The development of powerful virtual and AI models and architectures—and the resulting struggle for global dominance and the expansion of technological ecosystems—pose profound challenges. Who are the key actors in this disruptive global social transformation, and how is AI reshaping existing energy, economic, and geopolitical infrastructures? What risks does this pose to the rule of law, to democratic opinion formation, and to digital sovereignty?
