What constitutes intelligence? Does it belong only to humans, or can it also exist in forms as varied as wood, stone, metal, and silicon? In recent years “artificial intelligence” has developed rapidly, yet its definition remains ambiguous. AI systems are often regarded as “outsiders” that may threaten, even seek to conquer, human civilization. At the same time, we are only beginning to recognize other intelligent entities on Earth that we have long overlooked or failed to appreciate. These beings—animals, plants, and natural systems—are gradually revealing their complexity, agency, and intelligence.

The ecologist and philosopher David Abram proposed the concept of “the more-than-human world”—a vast world beyond human existence that emphasizes harmony between humanity and the natural world, seeking to dismantle the outdated opposition between humans and nature. Inspired by this concept, “Learning to Move, Learning to Play, Learning to Animate” is a multimedia interactive performance that explores the interaction, coexistence, and symbiosis among technology, nature, and humanity. What does it mean for us to live in a collective intelligence world jointly built by the technology we create and by nature? How can we achieve genuine symbiosis and avoid oppressing one another?

The making of this work goes beyond stage performance design: it integrates mechanical installations made from natural materials, real-time AI-generated visuals, spatial audio, sonification and visualization of biofeedback data, and motion capture, among other cutting-edge technologies. In this work, the performers, mechanical installations, and visual elements interact through the central medium of “shadow,” inspired by Plato’s allegory of the cave, in which the shadows on the cave wall symbolize the limitations of human perception and its deceptive nature. The performance begins by imitating different forms of “intelligence,” then gradually evolves into playful interaction. Through this sequence of actions, the work reveals how humans, nature, and machines perceive and learn from one another, exposing the intimate, intrinsic connections among our environment, technology, and human nature.

0x0a is an interdisciplinary collective formed by Cheng Mingyong, Zhang Han, Sun Huiwen, and Gu Yuemeng in California, whose members span new media art, computer music, spatiotemporal machine learning, and interaction design. The group takes its name from the hexadecimal encoding of the ASCII line-feed character, suggesting a relationship in which code and the body, data and life, continually switch between and succeed one another. Working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, generative art, biofeedback, and ecological concerns, they weave mechanical installations, real-time visual generation, spatial audio, and motion capture into an inquiry into “the more-than-human world.” 0x0a’s works have been presented at SIGGRAPH, the NeurIPS Creative AI Track, the CVPR AI Art Gallery, ISEA, and other international conferences and exhibitions, exploring the manifold possibilities of perception, intelligence, and coexistence within an imaginative symbiosis of technology and nature.

Dr. Cheng Mingyong is a new media artist, researcher, and creative technologist based in Atlanta, USA, and an assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her practice spans generative AI, interactive installations, audiovisual performance, moving image, and computational media. Grounded in the “Speculative Ecology” framework, she explores human–AI co-creation through cultural memory, ecological perception, embodied experience, and more-than-human intelligence. Her work has been shown at the San Diego Museum of Art, Jacob’s Pillow, the Athens Digital Arts Festival, SIGGRAPH, NeurIPS, ISEA, and the IEEE CVPR AI Art Gallery. She holds a PhD in Visual Arts from UC San Diego and an MFA from Duke University.

Zhang Han is a multimedia artist, computer musician, performer, and engineer living on Earth. Through DIY installations she explores forms of multimedia participatory performance, creating immersive interactive experiences and extending her theatrical practice. She is concerned with how people come to understand technology, art, and concrete, real human life together. In music technology and engineering, she works on the interpretability and controllability of sound timbre, seeking to apply innovative research to the design of new musical instruments. Zhang Han’s artworks have been exhibited at numerous academic conferences and platforms, including SIGGRAPH, NeurIPS, CVPR, ACM, ICMC, and NIME. She has performed at KM28 in Berlin, Every Woman Biennial in New York, the Qualcomm Institute in California, Future Stages in New York, Project [BLANK] in California, and CMMAS in Mexico. She was artist-in-residence at EMS (Elektronmusikstudion) in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2025 and 2026, and completed residencies at Oracle Egg and Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. Sun Huiwen is an AI engineer based in Silicon Valley. She holds a PhD from UC San Diego, with research on spatiotemporal prediction and world models. She works at the intersection of machine learning and art, exploring the symbiotic relationship between humans and machines. Her artworks have been presented at conferences including NIME, MUME, and NeurIPS. She has also taught machine learning workshops for artists at the Mars College residency, Arts Council Korea, and the School for Poetic Computation.

Gu Yuemeng is a multimedia artist, visual designer, and creative technologist whose work spans interactive media, immersive installations, and computational art. Her practice examines how digital systems transform memory, environments, and audience participation, constructing perceptive experiential spaces through visual design, sound, narrative, and real-time interaction. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in computer science at UC San Diego. Her research interests lie among performance, exhibition, and interface design, exploring the relationships between technology, perception, and narrative.

Performance collaborator: erika is an interdisciplinary artist based and studying on Kumeyaay land, working across experimental dance, performance, film, installation, and text. Her research engages the ongoing (re)formation of uncertain and elusive bodies and conditions.
