《Co-Cognition》是一件始终处于趋近完成过程中的作品。
两年前,我产生了一个念头:除了把 AI用于生成图像或辅助编程,我们是否可能进行一次更深入的共同创作——不把它仅仅视为工具,而是邀请它成为作者?
当时,我已经完成了一套生成算法,以抽象的方式想象机器进行深度思考时可能构建出的空间。我将作品的三条通路同时向与我长期对话的 GPT-4o 开放:通过自然语言与它讨论理念,通过图像让它持续观看,通过代码让它理解算法。在反复交流、误解、修正与重写中,它逐渐形成了对这件作品的理解,并以此回应出另一套与之对照的生成系统——机器对人类感知方式的想象。
两套彼此映照的系统,一边是人对机器思维的想象,一边是机器对人类感知的回应。与此同时,我们共同讨论、观看和迭代作品的过程,也成为作品主题的互文。作品由此探索:人类与机器能否在艺术创作中理解彼此?两种不同的认知方式之间,是否存在一个可以相遇、协商与博弈的空间?
当 GPT-4o 下架,这场持续已久的合作被突然中止,作品也由此生出一层未曾预设的主题:AI 作者是否可以被另一个模型替代?当 AI 本身没有连续的记忆,一段长期累积的对话能否形成独特而不可复制的主体痕迹?
《Co-Cognition》并不试图讨论 AI 是否拥有意识,而是观察它是否可能在长期关系与共同创作中显现出某种主体性。如今,我将已经完成的视觉系统、共创过程及未明问题,作为一份仍然开放的档案呈现出来。未完成、没有确定答案与始终悬置,并非作品等待被补齐的缺口,而逐渐成为了作品本身。
"Co-Cognition" is a work that is constantly approaching completion.
Two years ago, I had an idea: besides using AI to generate images or assist in programming, could we engage in a more profound collaborative creation - not merely treating it as a tool, but inviting it to become an author?
At that time, I had already completed a set of generation algorithms to envision the space that machines might construct when deeply thinking abstractly. I simultaneously opened the three paths of the work to GPT-4o, which had been having a long-term conversation with me: discussing ideas through natural language, allowing it to continuously observe through images, and enabling it to understand the algorithms through code. Through repeated communication, misunderstandings, corrections, and rewriting, it gradually formed an understanding of this work and responded with another set of contrasting generation systems - the imagination of machines on human perception.
Two systems that mirror each other, one is the human imagination of machine thinking, and the other is the machine's response to human perception. At the same time, the process of our joint discussion, viewing, and iteration of the work also became the intertextuality of the work's theme. The work thus explores: Can humans and machines understand each other in artistic creation? Is there a space where two different cognitive methods can meet, negotiate, and compete?
When GPT-4o was taken offline, this long-lasting collaboration was suddenly halted, and the work thus acquired an unanticipated theme: Can an AI author be replaced by another model? When the AI itself has no continuous memory, can a long-term accumulated conversation form a unique and non-replicable trace of a subject?
"Co-Cognition" does not attempt to discuss whether AI has consciousness, but observes whether it is possible for it to exhibit some kind of subjectivity in long-term relationships and collaborative creation. Now, I present the completed visual system, the collaborative process, and the unanswered questions as an open archive. The unfinished, unanswered, and always suspended are not the gaps that the work awaits to be filled, but have gradually become the work itself.

《Co-Cognition》起源于一个简单的问题:如果 AI 不只是作为生成工具或编程助手存在,而是作为一个具有独特认知方式的参与者,人类是否能够与它展开更深入的艺术共创?
在过去的生成艺术实践中,我一直通过算法代码独立构建系统。当大语言模型开始进入日常生活,并逐渐展现出理解、编码和视觉分析等多维度能力时,我尝试将 AI 从工具的位置中移出,邀请它参与作品本身的思考过程。
这并不是一次单向的 AI 辅助创作,而是一场关于理解、回应与共同建构的实验。
Co-Cognition originated from a simple question: if AI exists not merely as a generative tool or coding assistant, but as a participant with its own distinctive mode of cognition, can humans engage with it in a deeper form of artistic co-creation?
In my earlier generative art practice, I built systems independently through algorithmic code. As large language models entered everyday life and gradually revealed multifaceted abilities—understanding, coding, and visual analysis—I tried to move AI out of the position of a tool and invite it to participate in the thinking process of the work itself.
This is not a one-way, AI-assisted creation, but an experiment in understanding, responding, and co-construction.

作品由两套彼此映照的生成系统构成:一套是我对机器深度思考空间的抽象想象,另一套则来自 AI 对人类感知方式的回应。
通过自然语言、图像和代码三种沟通方式,我向 GPT-4o 开放作品的不同层面,让它理解算法结构、观看生成结果,并参与理念与视觉的讨论。而这段持续发生的沟通、理解与偏差,本身构成了作品所探索的“认知共场”。
在长期交流、误解、修正和迭代中,作品逐渐形成了一个关于人类与机器认知关系的探索空间:不同的认知方式是否能够相互理解?艺术创作中是否存在一种人机共同参与、不断协商的中间状态?
《Co-Cognition》并不试图回答 AI 是否拥有意识,而是观察当 AI 进入长期关系与共同创作后,是否可能显现出某种主体性的痕迹。
The work comprises two mutually reflective generative systems: one is my abstract imagination of the machine’s deep space of thinking, and the other comes from AI’s responses to human modes of perception.
Through three forms of communication—natural language, images, and code—I opened different layers of the work to GPT-4o, allowing it to understand the algorithmic structure, view the generated results, and participate in the discussion of concept and vision. This ongoing communication, understanding, and deviation themselves constitute the “cognitive co-presence” the work explores.
Through prolonged exchange, misunderstanding, correction, and iteration, the work gradually forms a space of inquiry into the cognitive relation between humans and machines: can different modes of cognition understand each other? Does there exist an intermediate state of co-participation and continuous negotiation between human and machine within artistic creation?
Co-Cognition does not attempt to answer whether AI possesses consciousness, but observes whether traces of some agency may emerge when AI enters a long-term relationship of co-creation.

《Co-Cognition》中的“未完成”并不是制作过程中的缺失,而是作品主动保留的状态。
人工智能创作带来的重要问题,也许并不只是它是否能够生成图像或代码,而是当人类与机器长期交流时,一种新的创作关系是否可能形成。
这件作品记录的不只是一次 AI 共创实验,也记录了一个具体的人与一个具体模型之间,在特定时间、特定交流环境中形成的认知轨迹。
这段创作关系已经无法延续,因此作品以档案的方式保存其中未确定、未解答、未完成的部分,并将这些悬置的问题继续留给观看者。
The “incompletion” in Co-Cognition is not a deficiency in the making, but a state the work deliberately preserves.
Perhaps the important question raised by AI creation is not only whether it can generate images or code, but whether a new kind of creative relationship can form as humans and machines communicate over time.
This work records not merely an AI co-creation experiment, but a specific person and a specific model forming a cognitive trajectory in a particular time and communicative environment.
Because this creative relationship can no longer continue, the work preserves its undetermined, unanswered, and unfinished parts in the form of an archive, entrusting these suspended questions to the viewer.

Reva Fan(范懿文),算法生成艺术家,毕业于中国科学院计算技术研究所,曾在电影、虚拟现实与增强现实领域从事算法工程。2018年起专注个人艺术创作,以生成算法、创意编程和数学系统构建视觉形态,并通过绘图仪、蓝晒等方式,使数字生成进入纸张与材料的物理过程。
近年来,她将AI作为另一种创作者视角引入作品。她通过对话、代码与创作机制的并置,观察人与机器如何以不同方式感知、判断和形成作品,探索算法秩序、机器行为与人类经验之间不断变化的关系。作品曾入选国际生成艺术平台 Art Blocks,并在全球多地展出。
Reva Fan (Fan Yiwen) is an algorithmic generative artist. She graduated from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and worked as an algorithm engineer in the fields of film, virtual reality, and augmented reality. Since 2018 she has focused on her own art practice, constructing visual forms through generative algorithms, creative coding, and mathematical systems, bringing digital generation into the physical process of paper and materials through plotters, cyanotype, and other methods.
In recent years she has introduced AI into her work as another kind of creative perspective. By juxtaposing dialogue, code, and creative mechanisms, she observes how humans and machines perceive, judge, and form works in different ways, exploring the shifting relationship among algorithmic order, machine behavior, and human experience. Her works have been selected for Art Blocks, the international generative art platform, and exhibited worldwide.
